Surprise Endings : Social Science and Literature (Week 1)

Surprise Endings: Social Science and Literature, ENG/ISIS 390 http://sites.duke.edu/english390-5_01_s2013 /. This course investigates the different ways we know the world and ourselves--and the many ways we deceive ourselves about what we think we know. It asks how we come to see that we often have a much higher opinion of ourselves--our motivations, our history, our beliefs--than we actually evince in everyday life. Professors Dan Ariely (Fuqua, Economics, SSRI) and Cathy N. Davidson (English, Franklin Humanities Institute, PhD Lab in Digital Knowledge).

Global Business Outlook Survey - Fourth Quarter, 2012

Uncertainty about the fiscal cliff has paralyzed the corporate sector in the United States. The Duke University/CFO Magazine Global Business Outlook survey of nearly 900 CFOs say going over the cliff will lead to dramatic slowdowns in hiring and business spending in 2013 and will continue to hurt firms for years to come. Surprisingly, CFOs don't see the solution as solely cutting government spending. Instead, results show that 63 percent of companies prefer a plan like Bowles-Simpson, which pairs $2 of spending cuts with each dollar of tax increases. "It is shocking that CFOs overwhelmingly support Bowles-Simpson, which includes tax rate hikes to raise revenues," John Graham, a professor of finance at Duke's Fuqua School of Business and director of the survey. "CFOs generally prefer less taxation across the board, so their willingness to accept tax increases is dramatic."

Critical Decisions - Introduction

In today's world of "patient empowerment," patients have been told they hold all the cards. But even if that were true (and it's not!), most wouldn't know how to play them anyway. Duke's Peter Ubel, Professor of Marketing and Public Policy, shows how hidden dynamics in the doctor/patient relationship keep us, and our loved ones, from making the best medical choices. From doctors who struggle to explain, to patients who fail to properly listen, countless factors alter the course of our care, causing things to go seriously awry.

Leadership 'Heuristics:' Keys to Establishing Leadership Quickly (Live Session)

Research by Fuqua Professors Lind and Sim Sitkin, working in conjunction with Annick Jansen and Lester Levy (scholars at the University of Auckland in New Zealand), has shown that there are several types of leadership actions that give rise to "fast leadership connections." The research shows three factors in particular that seem to help new leaders establish trust and credibility with those they will lead.

The three factors are:
- Leader sacrifice or investment. When new leaders make it clear that they are willing to invest their own time or put themselves at risk for the benefit of the team, followers' assessments of their leadership potential goes up very quickly.
- Leader-follower shared values. When new leaders behave in a way that makes it clear they share some important values with those they lead, the leader-follower connection "clicks" more quickly.
- Fairness. People care a lot about whether they will be treated fairly by those with authority over them. When a new leader demonstrates a lack of bias or a willingness to respect people of all backgrounds, his or her leadership gets an immediate, and lasting, boost.

Join Professor Allan Lind as he presents "Leadership 'Heuristics:' Keys to establishing leadership quickly." We will discuss:
- Ways research can help you step into new leadership positions
- Specific behaviors that show leadership
- The science behind the research
