Snapshots from Duke's 2012 Pumpkin Fun Run

LIVE FOR LIFE, Duke's employee wellness program, hosted 286 students, faculty, staff and more as part of this year's annual Pumpkin Fun Run. The event raised $1,028 to support Duke's Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation program, which provides care and support to children suffering from cancer, genetic defects or blood disorders.

In addition to running and walking the 2.9-mile Al Buehler Cross Country Trail near the Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club, participants enjoyed dancing, music and a roving magician. Children's activities included an inflatable slide, pumpkin painting and face painting.

OLLI at Duke: Linda Carl - Traveling Through History Via Art

Winter Term: Wednesdays, 10-11:30 at Forest at Duke
Explore how treasures from close by take us far away in time and place. Faculty from nearby universities and museums will show us striking objects from Egypt, Palmyra, Crete, Greece, and Rome to reconstruct history via art. The object will be a jumping off place for larger issues. Each object or set of objects will be placed in its historical context. Faculty will show us what the object means to the people who created, admired or used it. As we hear stories about the object's past we will also learn how the object may connect to the present. After examination in the classroom, we will visit local museums to further discuss and look at these objects. More information is available at: http://www.learnmore.duke.edu/olli/

Curator Talk: The Photographs of Hugh Mangum

Curator Sarah Stacke gave a talk at the Center for Documentary Studies about her work on the current CDS exhibit "Keep All You Wish: The Photographs of Hugh Mangum," which features work by the turn-of-the-century portrait photographer; the exhibit is on view through October 20.

Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, Hugh Mangum began working as an itinerant photographer in the early 1890s and continued until shortly before his death in 1922, traveling by rail through North Carolina and the Virginias. Rare for his time, Mangum attracted and cultivated a clientele that drew heavily from both the African American and white communities, especially in his hometown.

This event was cosponsored by Duke University’s Graduate Liberal Studies program.
