Born in Belfast, Dawn Purvis came of age during The Troubles, the civil conflict that left more then 3,000 dead in Northern Ireland by the time a peace accord was signed in 1998. A member of the Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) and expert in women's issues, she won a seat in the 1996 Northern Ireland Forum election and then in the 1998 Northern Ireland Assembly election, representing East Belfast. Walling Baghdad

A presentation on the politics of walls and borders to show how these concrete barriers have fractured the city of Baghdad, as shown in contemporary Iraqi poetry. This presentation focuses on the ways in which borders both define and delimit the identity of subaltern "Others." It then demonstrates how literature provides a counter-occupation resistance narrative to reclaim identity and subjectivity.

Surprise Endings- Week 5: Relativity and Defaults

Another topic studied by social scientists is how people value things in relative terms rather than absolute terms. How much are you willing to pay for a cup of coffee? How do you decide how much an iPhone is worth? What factors change our valuations? In literature, we can also recognize these kinds of relative evaluations in which protagonists make their decisions dependent on others. A related topic we might also consider in this unit is the concept of "defaults": how marketers learn quickly that consumers tend to make choices based on the path of least resistance. For example, consider organ donations: if people are asked to opt-in ("sign if you want to participate") to be an organ donor, it results in low participation. However, if they are asked to opt out ("sign if you don't want to participate), it ensures a larger percentage of potential organ donors. This topic raises issues about how difficult it is for us and literary characters to deviate from the status quo.

Duke in Montréal

The program is set in cosmopolitan Montréal, the second largest Francophone city in the world. Participants explore how history, language, and immigration have shaped the development of Québec's marketing practices. Together with government officials, business leaders, and local artisans, students examine how globalization impacts cultural identity and how Québec markets have adapted to these challenges. Coursework and site visits are conducted in French.

Students examine firsthand the effects of the politique linguistique through case studies and site visits to companies and marketing agencies. Excursions to Montréal's world famous museums, markets, and performing arts venues showcase how the city presents itself to its more than 7 million yearly visitors. The program also includes one week at the UNESCO World heritage site of Québec City to study how artisans have preserved their cultural products through the development of agrotourism and économusées.
