Brackets 4 Life - Our Mission
Brackets4Life applies the energy of March Madness to take steps towards finding a cure for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). 50% of the pot will go to SIDS and the top 5 winners will be able to choose which charity will receive their part of the pot.
On July 2, 1996, the McConville family was blessed with the arrival of their second son, Christopher James. On December 2, 1996, Christopher's five month birthday, the family’s world was shattered when they lost their precious baby to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Over the past 9 years the McConville family has raised over $1 million for the CJ Foundation for SIDS. These much needed funds have given us the power to find answers to our questions and contribute to a future where every child has the opportunity to live life to its fullest.
“As we continue to live our life without "our little sunshine", we feel a "ray of hope" as we join with the CJ Foundation in the battle against SIDS. Together, we will make a difference in the life of a child.” - Jennifer McConville
How it works:
1. Create an account
2. Enter the name of your chosen charity
3. Fill out a bracket with your team selections and submit
Michael approached InCube asking for help in the creation of a March Madness Bracket website to raise money for the CJ Foundation for SIDS. InCube was enthusiastic about Michael’s idea and we planned a Hack-a-Thon to completely finish his project in one night.
The CJ Foundation is the largest non-government funder of research about SIDS and support for the families that have been affected by a SIDS death. Since its founding in 1994, the CJ Foundation for SIDS has raised more than 50 million dollars.
Incube is a student entrepreneurship group at Duke University. To learn more about InCube and its members check out: http://www.incube.us/

The Week at Duke {in 60 seconds}: Mind Meld; Froshlife; Spelling Champ
Talk about a meeting of the minds -- Duke scientists have electronically linked the brains of pairs of rats, so they can communicate directly to solve simple behavioral puzzles. The research is part of an effort to restore motor control to paralyzed people.
Freshman filmmakers: The Froshlife film competition challenges first-year students to capture their college experience in a short video. This year's winner: "Greater Than Oneself" by the Jarvis residence hall.
And speaking of best picture ... a recent PhotoWalk on campus allowed photographers to capture the sights of campus research facilities. Tweet and Instagram us your Duke photos with the tag #PictureDuke.
Congratulations to seventh-grader Brian Werden. Last weekend the local middle school student won the regional Scripps Spelling Bee hosted here at Duke.
Finally, it's election day ... for Duke Student Government. Juniors Stefani Jones and Patrick Oathout are competing to be the next DSG president. Good luck guys.
