Duke Researchers: Can Smart Phones Help With Weight Loss? (WRAL)

Researchers at Duke who say special smart phone applications may help young adults stick to their weight-loss goals. Bryan Batch, M.D., an endocrinologist, said, "In participating in the study, people have a real unique opportunity to help us answer what is a critical question about weight loss in the young adult age group, because traditionally, these studies have been done in older individuals."

'The Feedbacker' Internet Application

Sam Iglesias and Jade Davis are currently enrolled in 'Future Class', a seminar taught by Cathy Davidson in which graduate and undergraduate students develop projects around HASTAC (hastac.org). This Wednesday at the Center event was presented by HASTAC (Humanities, Arts, and Science, Technology Advanced Collaboratory). Wednesday at the Center is a Franklin Humanities Institute event sponsored by Duke University.

Speakers: James Boyle is William Neal Reynolds Professor of Law and co-founder of the Center for the Study of the Public Domain at Duke Law School. Bas Savenije is Director General of the Dutch Royal Library, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, in the Netherlands. Lucie Guibault is assistant professor of copyright and intellectual property law at the Institute for Information Law of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Simona Levi is a multidisciplinary artist born in Italy and established in Barcelona since 1990. She is the Director of Conservas, a cultural activity centre. Charlotte Hess, Syracuse University. Marietje Schaake, member of the European Parliament on behalf of D66, member of the committee on culture, media and education, and co-founder of the Intergroup on New Media of European Parliament members. Moderator: Paul Keller is copyright and social media expert. He is the national project lead for Creative Commons Netherlands, and he coordinates Knowledgeland’s copyright activities through the project Images for the Future.

Medical Device Allows for Less-Invasive Surgeries (WRAL)

Richard Stack, M.D., Duke professor emeritus of cardiology, comments in this story about inventing the SPIDER surgical system to perform abdominal surgeries through a single, small incision. The Walltown Neighborhood History Project

In Summer 2010 DukeEngage, History, and ISIS partnered on a summer camp at the Carter Neighborhood School. A faculty-student team created and taught a summer workshop for Durham middle-school students around the twin themes of computer technology and Durham history, particularly the history of the Walltown neighborhood which lies north of East Campus. The workshop helped middle-school students master core technology skills while they built an interactive historic map of their neighborhood using GIS technologies.
