Effects of Antibiotics from an Effluent Dominated Prairie Stream
Recent worldwide surveys have established the ubiquitous presence of pharmaceuticals in surface waters receiving treated sewage effluent.Stream systems where such effluent dominates flow may be at the highest risk for ecosystem level changes. A monitoring study conducted on Wascana Creek, Saskatchewan, Canada indicate that antibiotics were always present in stream water for at least 50km below the sewage outfall. Subsequent field and laboratory research indicated that these antibiotics have effects on aquatic microbial (algae and bacteria) community structure and function at concentrations currently seen in effluent dominated ecosystems.Published 4 months ago

Knocking on Memory's Door with a Video Camera
A handful of people took video cameras and went back to their respective villages. They went in search of the old generation that was still living there in dim, stark houses. They went to uncover the memories hidden inside them. From old people in the village, this was the first time anyone had come with a camera to ask them to open their memory chests. Here was the younger generation to ask the elders about the past. Their stories are now documentary films presented in this program.Published 7 months ago
Visiting with the Deceased: Customs Across Cultures
Modern Mexican celebrations of Day of the Dead are tied to indigenous rituals dating as far back as 3000 years ago. Today we find US versions of Mexico's celebration co-mingling with Halloween symbols on both sides of the border. Extending from an exhibit entitled, "Day of the Dead: From Mexican Roots to Present Day in the US" panelists will examine traditions of celebration and mourning surrounding visiting with the decreased not only in Mexico, but also in other parts of the world, including Asian, Africa, Europe, and the United States.
