Voter ID Laws: Preventing Fraud or Promoting Disenfranchisement?

Voter ID laws are popping up in states all over the country. Proponents say they are necessary to prevent voter fraud. Opponents claim they are solutions designed to address problems that don't really exist. Even more troubling, they might even be used to disenfranchise large swaths of our nation's poor. Please join the Duke Law ACLU in welcoming Clare Barnett from the Southern Coalition for Social Justice and Jen Frye from Democracy NC for a discussion about this controversial topic!

Surprise Endings - Week 6: Evil, Obedience, and Resistance

People are capable of tremendous evil and great good, depending on the circumstances they are placed in. Acts of both obedience and resistance have the capacity to inspire, like in religion and social movements, and to repulse, like Nazism and the French Reign of Terror. This class will analyze the causes of that duality based on both social experiments, historical reactions, and literary commentary.

Pesticides, Health, and Safety: National Farmworker Awareness Week 2013

This piece was created to spread awareness about the harm that pesticides are causing each and every one of us. Hopefully this will inspire some to think about the foods we are eating and the people who are being exposed to harmful chemicals so that we have cheaper and easier ways of getting those foods.

On the Backs of the Poor: National Farmworker Awareness Week 2013

With each visit we make to a grocery store or supermarket, we are greeted by store signs advertising the low prices of the food we eat. As consumers, we often don't know or remember that those low prices come at the expense of farmworkers. For National Farmworkers Awareness Week, Student Action with Farmworkers offers us a reminder that "a food system which is cheap but is built on the backs of poor is not moral and is not sustainable."

The Face of Hard Labor in North Carolina: National Farmworker Awareness Week 2013

In the 1930s, several federal labor laws were passed to protect the rights of workers, except those of farmworkers. Even today, agricultural laborers do not have the national rights to organize a union, minimum wage or overtime pay. The Face of Hard Labor in North Carolina represents the continued struggle of the farmworker against workplace inequality in our state.

Support equal workplace rights.
Support the farmworker.
Support an equal North Carolina.

The Childhood We Deserve: National Farmworker Awareness Week 2013

This video illuminates the stark contrast between what is considered a "normal" childhood in North Carolina and what migrant children often must endure. This is facilitated by interviewing various students at Duke University, all of which were blessed with the ability to have carefree childhood years. By showing the contrast, greater awareness of the harsh conditions with which migrant children deal is attained.
