Arab Springs Conference -Dean Srinivas Aravamudan
The Arab Springs Conference opening remarks from Dean Aravamudan. The Duke University Middle East Studies Center (DUMESC), in collaboration with the Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations at UNC-Chapel Hill (CCSMEMC), organized an interdisciplinary conference, “Arab Springs: Revolution and Repression,” that explores these questions from multiple perspectives. The conference addresses some of the artistic, technological, visual, and media dimensions of these struggles and transformations, including slogans, graffiti, poetry, cartoons, and songs, as well as the circuits of state controlled television, al-Jazeera, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and texting. International Criminal Courts in the Pursuit of Justice
The Center for International and Comparative Law and the Kenan Institute for Ethics in association with the Law & History Society, International Law Society, ICCSN, Human Rights Law Society, and BLSA invite all students to join, from The Hague, Judge Patrick Robinson of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (President, 2008-2011). Judge Robinson will discuss the role of the ICTY and international criminal courts in the pursuit of justice and reconciliation. He will also reflect on his extensive career in international law, having chaired the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and served on the Sixth Legal Committee of the UN General Assembly for 26 years. Dr. Michael Byers spoke on the question, "Who Owns the Arctic's Oil?" on March 27, 2012 at 4:30 PM in the Duke University Energy Hub. Dr. Byers holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at the University of British Columbia. Prior to 2005, he was Professor of Law and Director of Canadian Studies at Duke University; from 1996-1999 he was a Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford University. Michael is a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and Ottawa Citizen, and a frequent guest on the CBC, CTV and Global. His most recent book is "Who Owns the Arctic?" At Duke, Theater Studies Meets Business
Nathaniel Hill, Duke class of 2012, describes how he married his love of theater with his aptitude for business to make his ideal major. The culmination of his unique undergraduate trajectory is an epic interdepartmental production of the play Ragtime, with him as producer. Duke's Department of Theater Studies, Markets and Management Certificate, Duke in New York, and the student theatrical group Hoof and Horn are the key players that helped him make his way.Ragtime is a joint production of Duke's Departments of Theater Studies and Music, the Dance Program, Hoof and Horn, the Duke Chamber Players, and the office of the Vice Provost for the Arts.
