Orin Starin: Tiger Woods on Cusp of Redemption
If Tiger Woods wins this week's Masters, it will close the circle on his drama of scandal and disgrace, says Duke's Orin Starn, who studies the intersection of sports and popular culture.
"Just three years ago, a sex scandal turned Woods into a favorite target for late-night jokes and tabloid sensationalism, and his life suddenly became a strange reality show," said Starn, an anthropologist whose most recent book, "The Passion of Tiger Woods," examines the cultural reaction to golf star Tiger Woods and his fall from grace following a sex scandal. "But now Woods is on the verge of return to his Olympian heights of golfing skill and acclaim, in some ways more humanized by his public imperfections, yet still very much the imperious lord of the fairways."
"A Masters victory would complete what anthropologists would call this 'social drama' of crisis, atonement and redemption that turned Woods' life upside down," he said.
